[Solved] Parsing failure: expected statement error on label

#1 Post by stuartwakefield » Wed Feb 22, 2017 5:05 pm

I’ve recently encountered a Ren’Py error that I can’t resolve. I’ve spent a couple of hours reading up on what it might be (and tried lots of things to fix it) with no success.

Here’s the parsing failure as described in errors.txt:

I’m sorry, but errors were detected in your script. Please correct the
errors listed below, and try again.

File «game/script.rpy», line 1016: expected statement.
label gamenight: (with an upwards arrow just after the colon)

Ren’Py Version: Ren’Py 6.99.12.3.2123

and here’s my code (line 1016 is the label gamenight: line):

label gamenight: scene bg apartment with dissolve "After a quick spruce up, the place is looking good. Nachos are ready to bake, and beer's in the cooler. I'm ready for whenever Joe—" "And here he is, right on time. Then again, this is Joe, so what else should I have expected?" m "Coming!" "At least he's not the kind of guy who comes early." scene bg apartment_blur show joe suit with dissolve j "For a minute I thought I might have had the wrong apartment." m "Sorry. I was just cleaning up." j "You clean up pretty good." m ". " with sshake j "The apartment, I mean. It looks great. It doesn't look like you just moved here. When I started at Bacchus, I don't think I bought a bed for the first six months." m "I have a bed." "A big, roomy bed." j "I'm sure I'll see it later." m "Excuse me?" j "You know, when you show me around." m "Ah, yes. The next grand tour's not scheduled for another few hours. " j "That's fine. I'm here to see you, not your bed." "Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn." m "You ready to get your ass kicked? I've got Battle World 7 and the will to win." "He pulls out a blank game case and cracks it open to pull out a plain disc marked with black pen." j "Or we could play this." m "Bloodbath Armageddon 2?! But this. this isn't. " j "Out for another four months, I know. I've got a friend over at the development studio, and he got me a beta copy." m "This is amazing. They built co-op into this right?" j "I thought it'd be good to play together." m "I can't believe you got this." j "One of the perks in working in the entertainment industry, I guess, and it's a thank you from me for getting me out of the office." j "And please don't tell anyone about this, okay? My friend would lose his job." m "I understand, and you're welcome - about getting you out of the office." "I'd like to get you out of more than just your office. " m "Why do you put in so many hours, anyway?" j "Your predecessor left in something of a hurry. I've had to pick up his work." m "What happened?" j "I'm not at liberty to say. It's between him and HR." if $ joe_rumour == True: "I wonder if that's the guy he was sexting. " else: m "Sounds heavy." j "It's had quite an impact on office morale." m "You want a beer?" j "It's a little early, but what the hell. And let's talk about something besides work. I'm here to get my game on." "I pull the coldest beer out of the fridge and hand it to him." "He cracks it open with his bare hands and takes a sip." j "Damn, that's good. I don't feel like I've had a drink in ages. You ready to make Armageddon a whole lot bloodier?" m "I thought you'd never ask. " "The game's every bit as good as I'd hoped, and Joe is the perfect co-op partner." "We smash through level after level, helping each other out of seemingly impossible situations through non-verbal communication that borders on telepathic." "But I'm jolted out of the mayhem and back into the room when Joe suddenly pauses the game." j "Sorry, my friend, but I need to use the little boy's room." m "That's okay. It's through there, first door on the left. You want another beer? A snack? I have nachos ready to throw in the oven." j "You do? That'd really hit the spot. How long have we been playing?" m "Three hours." j "Three? Better line those beers up - it's going to be a long night." j "First door on the left, you said. Be right back." "Later. " j "Can I ask you something? And please be honest?" m "Sure." j "Are people talking about me at the office?" m "I thought you didn't want to talk about work?" j "You're avoiding the question, so I'm guessing the answer's yes." if $ joe_rumour == True: m "I heard it in the gym, not the office." else: m "I haven't heard a thing, I promise." j "I see." m "What might they be talking about?" j "Some incriminating text messages on my phone." m "Are the rumours true?" j ". " m "Joe?" j "How about that next beer?" m "Now you're avoiding the question." "I pull open the fridge and get us both another bottle." m "So?" j ". " j "Growing up, I always dated girls. There was this one guy, but I don't even think he even knew I existed, so I didn't do anything about it. I just passed it off as a crush." j "Then I met the woman who's now my wife, and I felt so relieved, you know?" j "And I worked really hard at my marriage." m "But?" j "I was attracted to men, too. And women. Not everyone I laid eyes on, of course, but I was married, and I wasn't going to cheat on my wife." j "And then, out of the blue, she told me she wanted a divorce. Said she'd lost respect for me because I did everything she asked." j "I hadn't talked about my marriage at work. Being something other than gay at Bacchus isn't limiting, but it's not the norm." j "I was happy to let everyone assume I was gay. Besides, a lot of people think that being bisexual makes you a whore." j "One day—and it was a really bad day—I told someone in the office what was going on, and he was so supportive and comforting that I started to fall for him." j "And things got out of hand. He wasn't really interested in anything other than getting into my pants." m "How far did it go?" j "Nothing physical, but let's just say that he got to see what was in my pants." m "And he was more thna happy to share pictures of what was in his." j "My wife found them on my phone. She kicked me out, and she's using that as her grounds for divorce." m "Where did you go?" j ". " m "Hang on. are you living at the office?" j "I had nowhere else to go." m "What happened to the guy?" j "He still works at Bacchus." m "That's terrible." menu: "I hope you're back on your feet soon.": jump joeleaves "You can stay here the night.": jump stayhere
