Suicide Squad: Decoding All 16 Of Jared Leto’s Joker Tattoos
Continuing the Joker/Jason Todd theory: the J branded on his cheek is awfully reminiscent of the Arkham Knight reveal that shows Jason Todd to be alive. In that story, the Joker brands Todd with a J and convinces him Batman did it.
Obviously there’s a possibility that the J simply stands for Joker, but there’s too much evidence pointing towards Jason Todd’s involvement in the prologue to simply ignore the theories. And then of course there’s the line in Batman v Superman that Bruce Wayne utters: «20 years in Gotham. How many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?»
So someone turned bad who was previously good? Sounds an awful lot like Todd.
But then again, that could all be misdirection: the J could simply be a taunt to Batman over his dead ward. In that respect the position is also interesting: in prison tattoo tradition, a teardrop tattoo (which you have to admit the J resembles) represents a murder (usually committed by the wearer). For it to be a J in that position is particularly pertinent if you choose to accept Joker merely killed Todd rather than being him previously.
14. Star
The most over-looked tattoo so far (since it was covered in that first Joker reveal image), the star on the side of Joker’s face is a strange one. Stars are usually evocative of light, protection and guidance in tattooing (though their symbolism has been diluted by people thinking they just look pretty).
In Russian prison tattooing, stars mean power (in terms of rank), but that is limited to 8-pointed stars, so this wouldn’t seem to be symbolic of that.
It could of course simply mean stardom or it could be a vague reference to All Star Batman (it was super zany at times after all), but it’s strange that Ayer would claim all his tattoos show his history, when this one seems so general.

Surely it goes without saying? It’s so he doesn’t forget his name when he’s naked and looking in a mirror. Obviously.
6. The Jester
This dead jester tattoo could be symbolic on a couple of levels.
In terms of the mythology of the movie, it could be reference to his relationship with Harley Quinn — not only twisted and dark, but dead (since she’s been taken away from him). The fact that it’s not over his heart, though, suggests less romance than something more sinister. Perhaps it’s another trophy tattoo — his taunting at having killed Dr Harleen Quinzel and anointed her with a jester hat to become Harley?
In more traditional symbolism, a jester was used to denote someone who is a fan of jokes and pranks: could the dead jester for the Joker mean he’s no longer that sort of figure. That he’s an entirely different animal — more dangerous, more dark — than earlier, more jovial versions of the character?
5. «All In»
Cards tend to suggest a gambler, while All-In has further gambling connotations as well as commitment and ferocity. That latter element is seemingly confirmed by the presence of a skull within the ace of spaces card.
The Ace Of Spades itself has wider connotations: in military use, it was adopted as a symbol of luck, but also as one of fear. In Vietnam US soldiers would carry the card in their helmet for luck and to inspire fear in their enemy. Just as the Joker has done, the cards were also left on the bodies of dead Vietcong to advance that fear.
For the Joker, you’d have to think he’s adopted the card as a symbol of death; this is his version of the calling card that he used to leave behind in the comics to denote his crimes.
There’s also a specific reference in the comics: one of the Joker’s most iconic appearances came in Denny ONeills 1970 arc Five Way Revenge, which features a complicated scheme to take out Batman. The cover art shows Batman pinned to the same card.

Now, you might think that accepting that that bird on Joker’s bicep is a robin takes some suspension of ornithological knowledge, since robins tend to be smaller, stout birds with proud red breasts. But that’s English robins you’re thinking of: the American cousin looks spot on for this tattoo (without the colour obviously) — they’re taller, and more like a thrush. Thus concludes your lesson in birds.
Obviously there isn’t much analysis of the imagery itself needed: it’s another trophy image — like the J potentially representing Joker’s murder of Jason Todd (and obviously his knowledge of his secret identity), the dead bird crows his defeat and murder of Robin.
For the Jason/Joker theroists, it might be a strange thing for Todd to have marked on his skin, but in tattoo symbolism, birds represent journeys and navigation, and a dead one refers to an individual having lost their way. It potentially still fits the theory.
12. Fore-Arm Smile
Again, it doesn’t really take much to see that grim stretched smile is based on the Death Of The Family Joker skin mask smile, and more generally to Joker’s traditional facial wounds that Leto’s version does not sport.
On Leto’s arms (rather than the toy representation of his character), the smile looks an awful lot like it’s been taken from Alex Ross’ iconic Joker design, given the shape and the thin upper lip. And the toothier look is definitely in homage to The Man Who Laughs film.
The best thing about the placement is that even when the Joker is defending himself, all you’ll see is his grin.

7 Jared Leto Joker Tattoos For Insane Ink-spo
By now, most of the whole world must have seen the trailer for the new 2016 movie Suicide Squad. If not, where have you been hiding? There were many things I liked about it, from Jared Leto’s Joker tattoos to the revamped Harley Quinn complete with a new outfit and blue and pink pigtails. IMO, it could be the hottest movie of next year with its star-studded cast — including Will Smith as Dead Shot and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress — and new talent found in Margot Robbie of The Wolf of Wall Street fame, who will be playing Ms. Quinn. Plus I’m sure the special effects will be pretty epic; comic book movie adaptation CGI is usually state of the art.
Now, let’s talk about the Joker. This twisted mister has been played by some amazing gents. The iconic Jack Nicholson played the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman and the legendary Heath Ledger played the part in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Although they looked similar with their painted white faces, smeared red smiles, and green hair, the actors highlighted different aspects of the Joker’s personality and made incredible villains in their own right. Nicholson was zany and downright freakish, whereas Ledger was dark and eerie. Of course, both Jokers are portrayed as absolute psychopaths.
Which brings us to Jared Leto’s Joker and his bone chilling performance in the Suicide Squad trailer. Leto’s Joker has the same pale skin, blood red lips, and green hair as his predecessors but he has the addition of shaved eyebrows, metal teeth, and tattoos everywhere. So to celebrate the new Joker of Suicide Squad, here’s a selection of insane tattoos to give you some mad inkspiration.
1. The Hilariously Authentic Tattoo
Take inspiration directly from the man himself with this laughter tattoo, which is definitely no joke. It’s totally creepy, yet modern and edgy. If you don’t fancy committing to a chest full of chuckles, why not take a few laughs and flaunt them in a more elusive spot?
2. The Cheesy Comic Book Style
This tattoo has got a major Say Cheese and Die! Goosebumps novel feel to it. I can just imagine the Joker staring at his victim for too long and the victim exclaiming, «Why don’t you take a picture, it’ll last longer?» After which the Joker would whip out his camera, snap the poor unsuspecting person, and then things would get nasty.
3. Gotham Belongs To The Joker
I love how artistic this design is and the clever way in which Gotham City blends into the Joker’s face, giving off all kinds of metaphors.
4. The Joker & Harley Quinn Tattoo
If you can’t bear to have a Joker inspired tattoo without a little dash of his love interest Harley Quinn, then this tat is for you. It’s also great for those who are fans of subtle tattoos or for those who want to disguise their geekery because duh, «J» totally stands for «Jasmine,» the name of your first dog who was just a diamond of a pooch.
5. The Slightly Terrifying Tattoo
I am equal parts in awe of and majorly freaked out by this tattoo. This Joker ink is not one for the faint of heart, myself included.
6. The Jared Joker Tattoo
For fans of Jared Leto, this tattoo is a great choice. All of the details are there, from the «Damaged» tattoo across his forehead to the singular purple glove. The artist behind this tattoo certainly knows their Batman villains.
7. The Blood Splattered Tattoo
This tattoo encompasses one of the Joker’s catchphrases, «Why so serious?» with a gory font for maximum nightmarish effect.
So go on and get your freak on, you jokesters.
